Gut Strings & Historical Playing Styles
Jane has enjoyed nearly two decades performing with orchestras and ensembles at the forefront of the early music profession, collaborating with many of the first-generation pioneers of historical performance practice. She performs repertoire spanning the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras, appearing in contexts ranging from intimate chamber ensembles to orchestral and full-scale opera productions.
She made her concertmaster debut under Trevor Pinnock at the Handel Festival Halle, subsequently joining him and soprano Lucy Crowe for two international chamber music tours, including live broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 from Wigmore Hall.
In 2023, Jane was appointed Leader of the UK early-music ensemble La Nuova Musica, with whom she performs regularly at Wigmore Hall. Recent highlights include Handel’s Giustino at the Royal Opera House Linbury Theatre.
Increasingly in demand as a guest leader and director, she has worked with the English Baroque Soloists (with Christophe Rousset), Arcangelo (Jonathan Cohen), the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (directing, UK), the London Bach Society (directing, UK), Glyndebourne (OAE Community Opera), the European Brandenburg Ensemble (with Trevor Pinnock), Early Opera Company (Christian Curnyn), the Korean National Opera (with Matthew Halls), and Casa da Música (with Laurence Cummings).
She has undertaken multiple international tours, broadcasts and recordings. Her performances have taken her to many of Europe’s leading concert halls, including the Vienna Konzerthaus, Philharmonie de Paris, Teatro La Scala and the Concertgebouw, as well as to the Lincoln Center and the Sydney Opera House, in addition to appearances in Hong Kong and South Korea.
Chamber music forms a central strand of Jane’s artistic work. As violinist of the Rautio Piano Trio, she is currently recording the complete piano trios of Ludwig van Beethoven on fortepiano. Released across four volumes on Resonus Classics, the cycle culminates in March 2027 to mark the bicentenary of the composer’s death. Jane also directs the Felix Ensemble, a flexible string group specialising in nineteenth-century repertoire performed on gut strings.
